Set against the backdrop of the historic Magdalena Stock Driveway, Datil Well Campground stands out for its serene ambiance, incredible stargazing opportunities, and unique natural beauty. Just a mile west of Datil, New Mexico, this Bureau of Land Management (BLM) site is perfect for those seeking a peaceful camping experience with modern conveniences like picnic tables, fire rings, clean vault toilets, and potable water.
The campground features 22 sites, including three with electric hookups and a spacious group site with covered pavilions. At 7,400 feet elevation, you’ll enjoy cooler temperatures amidst pinyon-juniper and ponderosa pine woodlands. The area offers three miles of scenic hiking trails, showcasing panoramic views of the San Agustin Plains and Crosby Canyon, with interpretive signs enhancing the experience. Visitors can also enjoy the exceptionally dark skies, ideal for astrophotography, and occasional glimpses of local wildlife.
Located within a 30-minute drive are two must-see attractions: the Very Large Array (15 miles east), a world-renowned astronomical observatory, and Pie Town (20 minutes west), known for its delightful homemade pies.
