About Echo Lake Campground
How does camping at 10,600 feet above sea level sound to you? Echo Lake Campground, set amidst a verdant spruce forest in the Arapaho and Roosevelt National Forests, offers an unforgettable high-altitude escape marked by crisp air, star-studded skies, and serene nights. With its close proximity to the scenic Mount Evans Road, Echo Lake, and several incredible hiking trails, this picturesque destination is a haven for adventurers, anglers, and nature enthusiasts alike.
Each of the 17 campsites—seven exclusively for tents and ten suitable for smaller RVs—features picnic tables, campfire rings, and access to vault toilets and potable water via hand pumps. While hookups are unavailable, the well-maintained facilities, coupled with the rustic charm of the spruce-shaded grounds, ensure a comfortable experience. The campground’s windy conditions and cool nights, even in summer, highlight the need for layered, weather-appropriate preparation.
Located just 14 miles south of Idaho Springs along the scenic Highway 103, the campground is perfectly positioned for day trips to iconic attractions such as the Mount Evans Wilderness and the highest paved road in North America, Mount Evans Scenic Byway. Nearby Echo Lake Park, as well as the historic Echo Lake Lodge, provide additional recreation and dining options within walking distance. For a more urban touch, Idaho Springs offers a glimpse into Colorado’s mining history.
Echo Lake Campground is an ideal spot for a weekend getaway or an overnight stop on a broader tour of Colorado's mountainous treasures. Whether you're here to hike, fish, or revel in the natural beauty, this high-altitude gem promises a refreshing and peaceful retreat.
