Campground Overview
About Gatewood Group Campground
What makes Gatewood Group Campground stand out is its secluded, ridge-top location at 4,300 feet, offering remarkable access to Spruce Knob — West Virginia's highest peak — and the surrounding Monongahela National Forest. This campground features primitive group sites, ensuring a rustic and isolated camping experience perfect for adventurers who treasure tranquility and breathtaking natural landscapes.
The campground is composed of three group sites, each capable of accommodating up to 20 people. Amenities include picnic tables, lantern posts, fire rings, and accessible vault toilets, but no drinking water is available, requiring visitors to come prepared. Just two miles away, Spruce Knob Lake provides a stunning destination for fishing, boating (non-motorized), and hiking, while the nearby Gatewood Nature Trail offers additional exploration opportunities. This site is highly popular for stargazing, thanks to its unobstructed views of the night sky.
Located near the charming town of Whitmer, Gatewood Group Campground is not only close to Spruce Knob but also within 30 minutes of other appealing attractions, such as Seneca Creek Backcountry and numerous trails throughout the forest. This is an ideal destination for group getaways, family reunions, or small outdoor retreats, with activities ranging from hiking to wildlife watching, all under the canopy of one of the most ecologically diverse national forests in the country.
