Campground Overview
About Great Plains State Park
Great Plains State Park Campground offers a rare blend of lakeside recreation and rugged high plains terrain just four miles north of Mountain Park, Oklahoma. The campground sits along the eastern shore of Tom Steed Reservoir, where 56 RV sites with full hookups and 30 tent sites blend seamlessly with granite-studded landscapes and sweeping water views. Well-designed infrastructure includes boat ramps, a swimming beach, and strategically placed comfort stations with clean showers spaced between the two camping areas (Mountain Shade and Otter Creek).
The location provides immediate access to seven miles of challenging mountain biking trails through granite formations, while anglers can launch directly into the 6,400-acre reservoir known for hybrid striped bass and channel catfish campsite-to-table opportunities. Within 15 minutes, the Wichita Mountains Wildlife Refuge offers bison viewing and additional hiking among 59,000 acres of protected wilderness. Historical intrigue comes from the abandoned Gold Bells Mine ruins northeast of the campground, though caution is advised due to rattlesnake activity in the rock formations.
Campers consistently find the park delivers reliable amenities—including a seasonal bait shop and ADA-accessible picnic shelters—while maintaining the untamed character of southwestern Oklahoma’s high plains. The surrounding landscape transitions abruptly from water sports on the reservoir to rocky hiking trails dotted with prickly pear cactus and stunted hardwood groves. This versatile destination supports everything from quick fishing weekends to weeklong stays combining water recreation with high desert exploration.
