Campground Overview
About Hawk Campground
Perched high above Tennessee Valley, Hawk Campground offers an adventurous backcountry experience with panoramic views of the Marin Headlands just minutes from San Francisco. This primitive campground rewards intrepid hikers with unparalleled coastal vistas, serene isolation, and a true wilderness feel despite its proximity to urban areas.
The campground features three well-maintained sites, each outfitted with a tent pad, picnic table, and food locker. A single vault toilet serves the area, but there is no potable water available - campers must pack in all necessary supplies. The sites are nestled among a cluster of Monterey cypress and pine trees, providing some shelter while still allowing sweeping views of the surrounding landscape.
Located within the Golden Gate National Recreation Area, Hawk Campground is accessible only by foot via a challenging 2.5-mile uphill hike from the Tennessee Valley Trailhead. This remote setting offers a peaceful escape from the bustle of nearby San Francisco, with opportunities to spot local wildlife like deer, coyotes, and raptors soaring overhead. The campground serves as an excellent base for exploring the extensive trail network of the Marin Headlands, including hikes to Tennessee Beach, Rodeo Beach, and the historic Point Bonita Lighthouse.
