Campground Overview
About Hilltop Campground
Perched atop a rolling hill within Montana's sprawling Beaverhead-Deerlodge National Forest, Hilltop Campground offers a tranquil retreat characterized by shaded sites, breathtaking forested surroundings, and convenient proximity to pristine lakes and rugged trails. This secluded campground appeals to those seeking quiet escapes amidst nature, with limited crowd presence and abundant opportunities for outdoor recreation.
The campground features 18 designated campsites suitable for tents and small trailers (up to 22 feet), each equipped with picnic tables and fire rings. Vault toilets, potable water (seasonally available), and trash services ensure a comfortable camping experience, while the surrounding old-growth Douglas fir forest adds a sense of serenity. The nearby Cliff and Wade Lakes—just 1.25 and 1.75 miles away, respectively—are ideal for fishing, swimming, and non-motorized boating. A hiking trail conveniently connects the campground to the lakes and other areas of the trail system.
Located approximately 37 miles south of Ennis, Montana, Hilltop Campground is also a short drive from the Madison River, renowned for world-class trout fishing, and the historic Virginia City, a charming glimpse into the region's 19th-century past. Its elevated position at 6,800 feet ensures cooler summer temperatures, though weather preparedness is advised. Hilltop Campground is an ideal base for weekend getaways or extended explorations of the Beaverhead-Deerlodge area's natural wonders.
