About Horsethief Lake Campground

Just two miles from the iconic Mount Rushmore, Horsethief Lake Campground combines serene natural beauty with unmatched access to South Dakota’s Black Hills National Forest. Shaded by towering ponderosa and lodgepole pines, this lakeside retreat offers a peaceful ambiance and is an ideal launching point for exploring nearby attractions and recreation opportunities.

The campground boasts 36 sites that accommodate tents, trailers, and RVs, with several walk-to tent-only sites for enhanced privacy. Each site features picnic tables, campfire rings, and grills, along with access to vault toilets and potable water. While electric and sewage hookups are not available, the well-maintained facilities and quiet atmosphere make this a high-quality choice. Visitors can enjoy fishing, hiking, and wildlife watching at the adjacent Horsethief Lake, and notable trails such as the George S. Mickelson Trail and hikes to Black Elk Peak are within easy reach.

Situated only 10 miles south of Hill City and remarkably close to Mount Rushmore, this campground offers both convenience and seclusion. Nearby highlights include the Crazy Horse Memorial, Jewel Cave National Monument, and Custer State Park, making it perfect for short visits or extended stays immersed in the area’s natural and cultural treasures.
