Campground Overview
About KCL Campground
Set against the rugged expanse of Carrizo Plain National Monument, KCL Campground combines historical charm with the raw beauty of California’s largest grassland, offering visitors a quiet and remote retreat ideal for exploration and relaxation. This modest 12-site campground, located near Soda Lake Road, is defined by its rustic amenities, unique equestrian facilities, and a serene atmosphere ideal for stargazing, birdwatching, or nature walks.
Each campsite features a picnic table, fire pit, and access to well-maintained horse corrals, catering to both traditional campers and equestrian adventurers. Shaded by some of the few significant trees within the area, the sites also boast ADA-compliant vault toilets, though campers must bring their own water and supplies as electricity and drinking water are not provided. The campground's historic remnants, including barn structures from its time as a Kern County Land Company property, add a unique historical context to the experience.
Located about 60 miles east of San Luis Obispo, the campground serves as an excellent base for exploring the extensive trails, captivating views of the San Andreas Fault, and rich wildlife of the Carrizo Plain. Whether you're seeking a weekend retreat or an extended stay, KCL Campground offers a rare opportunity to unplug and immerse yourself in the timeless beauty of California's natural landscape.
