Campground Overview
About Ballinger Campground
Isolated in the rugged high desert of the Los Padres National Forest, Ballinger Campground is a premier destination for off-highway vehicle (OHV) enthusiasts, featuring direct access to nearly 70 miles of marked and varied trails. With a stark yet striking badlands landscape, this campground offers an adventurous escape characterized by open, undeveloped campsites and an immersive connection to the natural environment.
The campground offers 13 primitive campsites, each outfitted with a picnic table and fire ring, alongside two centrally located vault toilets. Its facilities emphasize self-sufficiency as there is no potable water, no dump station, and minimal infrastructure, ensuring a remote and no-frills experience. The surrounding terrain, dominated by junipers and hardy desert vegetation, sets the stage for OHV riders, while also accommodating hiking and biking opportunities. Trail options range from novice-friendly areas to challenging black-diamond paths with steep inclines and sandy washes. Spring and fall are the best seasons to visit, offering moderate temperatures in contrast to the intense summer heat.
Located approximately 25 miles from Maricopa and accessible via Ballinger Canyon Road, the campground is positioned within a 30-minute drive of New Cuyama for basic provisions. Its remoteness and lack of modern conveniences create an ideal retreat for thrill-seekers and those seeking solitude amidst dramatic desert vistas.
