Lake Hiddenwood Recreation Area

What sets the Lake Hiddenwood Recreation Area campground apart is its serene forested prairie landscape, offering a mix of shaded campsites, a peaceful lake, and hiking trails that trace a historic glacial valley. Located just five miles northeast of Selby, South Dakota, this campground combines rustic charm with modern conveniences such as electrical hookups at all 13 campsites, making it equally suitable for RVs, trailers, and tents.

The campground is thoughtfully designed with gravel pads, picnic tables, fire rings, and vault toilets, providing a simple yet comfortable camping experience. Although water service is seasonal (off between October and April), the area’s rich natural beauty and recreational options make it a year-round destination. Visitors can enjoy fishing on a 4,200-foot shoreline, kayaking on the lake, or hiking one of its three scenic trails, including the Blue Blanket Trail with its lake overlook. Families will also appreciate the playground, picnic shelters, and sandy swimming beach. While the lake’s dam has not been fully restored since past flooding, the site remains an excellent base for stargazing, birdwatching, and connecting with South Dakota’s prairie heritage.

The nearby town of Selby offers essential amenities, including the closest dump station, just a short drive away. With its quiet, natural setting and proximity to local history, this campground is ideal for weekend getaways, family trips, or casual outdoor escapes.
