Campground Overview
About Matsell Bridge Natural Area
What sets Matsell Bridge Natural Area apart is its rugged charm and exceptional versatility, offering a tranquil escape within nearly 2,000 acres of diverse Iowa landscapes. Campers are drawn to its secluded sites, rich wildlife habitat, and unique features such as the historic remains of George W. Matsell’s estate and one-of-a-kind amenities like a shooting range and equestrian camping facilities.
The campground provides primitive sites, including two pack-in or paddle-in options, equipped with picnic tables and fire rings. While water is available seasonally near the maintenance shop, there are no utilities on-site, making it an ideal choice for those seeking an off-grid experience. The 12+ miles of multi-use trails cater to both hikers and equestrian enthusiasts, while the Wapsipinicon River offers recreational opportunities like fishing and paddling—a scenic three-hour float to historic Stone City starts here. For a more unique stay, the rustic Red Oak Cabin, perched on a bluff overlooking the river, requires a short hike and embodies back-to-basics solitude year-round.
Located near Central City, Iowa, the Matsell Bridge Natural Area offers easy access to the cultural and natural attractions of Linn County. Within a 30-minute drive, visitors can explore Wapsipinicon State Park, the Indian Creek Nature Center, and the Prairie Woods Franciscan Spirituality Center, rounding out an unforgettable camping getaway rooted in nature and local history.
