About Mount Ascutney State Park Campground
Isolated atop the rugged slopes of Mt. Ascutney, the campground of Mount Ascutney State Park combines rich history, diverse recreation, and serene forestry that caters to both adventure seekers and tranquility lovers. With 38 wooded tent and RV sites, 10 lean-to shelters, and 5 rustic cabins, campers enjoy a retreat surrounded by dense hardwood and spruce forests, partly shaped by the hands of the Civilian Conservation Corps in the 1930s.
The campground excels in its integration with the natural landscape, featuring modern restrooms, coin-operated showers, and a sanitary dump station while maintaining a minimalist, rustic charm. Its two loops provide a balance of privacy and accessibility. Connected directly to the Futures Trail, campers can begin a 4.6-mile hike to the summit that highlights historical relics like the Steam Donkey and scenic vistas like Bare Rock. For those preferring a gentler climb, the park's 3.7-mile paved toll road offers access to picnic areas and an observation tower near the summit, showcasing panoramic views of Vermont and New Hampshire. Near the base, the Swoops & Loops mountain biking trail adds a family-friendly cycling option.
Located just minutes from Windsor, Vermont, the park offers easy access to local attractions like the Harpoon Brewery and the Connecticut River at Wilgus State Park, ideal for paddling. The site’s summit also serves as a launchpad for hang gliders, providing a unique spectacle for guests. Whether for a weekend getaway or an extended stay, Mount Ascutney State Park effortlessly merges outdoor adventure with peaceful seclusion.
