Campground Overview
About Obsidian Campground
Set against the serene backdrop of the Humboldt-Toiyabe National Forest, Obsidian Campground surprises visitors with its tranquil creekside atmosphere, enhanced by the soft rustling of aspens and pines and the gentle flow of the Little Walker River. This secluded destination combines privacy, natural beauty, and an enticing array of outdoor activities, making it an ideal retreat for campers seeking solitude and adventure alike.
With 14 tent and 14 unpaved RV sites (accommodating vehicles up to 35 feet), this first-come, first-served campground offers basic amenities, including picnic tables, fire pits, and three well-maintained vault toilets. While there is no potable water available, the setting compensates with its proximity to prime fishing spots along the trout-stocked Little Walker River and multiple trailheads. Hikers can explore routes like the looped path from the Molybdenite Creek trailhead or take the steep trail leading to Emma Lake at the base of Mount Emma. Medium usage ensures a balance between accessibility and quietude, ideal for both weekend getaways and longer stays.
Located approximately 19 miles from Bridgeport, California, the campground provides a gateway to the Hoover Wilderness and is nestled near other notable attractions, including Bodie State Historic Park and Mono Lake (within an hour’s drive). Its position offers campers unparalleled opportunities to connect with nature and explore the local high country while avoiding tourist-heavy areas. Whether you're fishing, hiking, or simply relaxing under the canopy of trees, Obsidian Campground delivers a compelling blend of solitude and rugged charm.
