Campground Overview
About Obsidian Flat Group Campground
Obsidian Flat Group Campground in the Eastern Sierra Nevada near Mammoth Lakes, California, offers a serene, back-to-basics group camping experience amid towering pine forests and striking volcanic formations. Perfect for those seeking seclusion, natural beauty, and outdoor adventure, this campground is distinguished by its scenic mountain views, access to nearby geologic formations like Obsidian Dome, and proximity to recreation areas.
The campground features a single group site that accommodates up to 50 people with space for five RVs (up to 40 feet in length) or up to 15 vehicles, making it ideal for family gatherings or group retreats. The site is equipped with a picnic table, a fire ring, bear-proof food storage lockers, and vault toilets, but potable water is not available, so campers should plan to bring their own supply. Deadman Creek flows nearby, offering a peaceful backdrop and fishing opportunities. The area also provides access to hiking trails leading into the Ansel Adams Wilderness, as well as excellent off-road vehicle trails and volcanic landscapes.
Located on Deadman Creek Road, just a short drive from U.S. Highway 395, the campground is about 20 minutes from Mammoth Lakes and less than 30 minutes from June Lake. This area is renowned for trout fishing, OHV opportunities, and its unique volcanic geography, including the striking Obsidian Dome. While the setting feels remote, its manageable proximity to services in nearby towns allows campers the chance to explore local culture or restock supplies during their stay.
