Campground Overview
About Palisades Campground
Isolated and tucked against the dramatic backdrop of the Palisades geological formation near Red Lodge, Montana, Palisades Campground offers a rugged yet serene setting ideal for campers seeking a tranquil escape. With just six first-come, first-served sites, this free campground is a haven for those who prioritize solitude and easy access to nearby hiking trails.
Situated only 3.5 miles from the town of Red Lodge and adjacent to the Custer Gallatin National Forest, the campground features vault toilets, picnic tables, fire rings, and some bear-proof food storage lockers. There is no potable water, so visitors should bring their own. The narrow, unpaved access road and 16-foot trailer limit make it best suited for smaller camping setups. From here, two popular trails, the Willow Creek Trail and the Palisades Trail, offer scenic hiking opportunities starting directly at the campground.
Conveniently close to Red Lodge Mountain Ski Resort and just a short drive from the Beartooth Scenic Highway, Palisades Campground provides an excellent launch point for day trips brimming with natural beauty. Whether you're looking to hike, mountain bike, or simply savor Montana's unspoiled wilderness, this site ensures an authentic outdoor experience.
