About Portola Redwoods State Park
Do you long for a tranquil escape beneath towering redwoods, where creeks meander through lush terrain? Portola Redwoods State Park Campground in La Honda, California, offers an idyllic setting for nature lovers seeking privacy, natural beauty, and a serene camping experience.
This campground features 53 standard drive-in campsites, alongside four walk-in sites, six trail camps, and four group sites, accommodating a variety of camping preferences. Facilities include flush toilets, potable water, and paid showers, ensuring comfort without compromising the park’s rustic charm. Each campsite is equipped with a picnic table and fire ring, while a visitor center and campfire center enrich the experience with interpretive programming. However, there are no hookups available, making this a destination best suited for tent camping or smaller RVs (up to 24 feet). Pet owners will appreciate that dogs are permitted in specified areas, including the campground and a select trail.
Situated in the Santa Cruz Mountains about 15 minutes from the town of La Honda, the park provides access to 18 miles of pristine hiking-only trails. Highlights include the Old Tree Trail, where a 1,200-year-old redwood stands majestically, and the Slate Creek Trail leading to the serene Peters Creek Grove of old-growth redwoods. Visitors can enjoy additional activities like wildlife watching, creek wading, and stargazing. Its remote location ensures a peaceful environment, ideal for weekend getaways or extended stays.
