Campground Overview
About Big Basin Redwoods State Park
How does it feel to camp amidst some of the tallest and oldest trees on Earth? Big Basin Redwoods State Park offers a truly unique experience in California’s oldest state park, where ancient redwoods, some towering over 300 feet, create an awe-inspiring canopy that echoes with quiet grandeur. Located in Santa Cruz County, this 18,000-acre park showcases a remarkable landscape that blends old-growth forests, recovering ecosystems, and varied habitats ranging from lush creek beds to sunlit ridges.
While the CZU Lightning Complex Fire of 2020 devastated much of the park, camping opportunities remain available at Rancho Del Oso, its coastal unit. Here, walk-in and bike-in sites provide a rustic, nature-immersive experience. Campsites are situated in proximity to trails that afford access to stunning Pacific Ocean views, as well as the iconic redwood groves. Campers can also enjoy the nearby Theodore J. Hoover Natural Preserve, a serene freshwater marsh, or set off on the challenging Skyline-to-the-Sea Trail that traverses the park’s diverse terrain.
Located about 22 miles northwest of Santa Cruz, Big Basin offers access to over 80 miles of trails, including the Redwood Loop Trail—a short, accessible hike surrounded by monumental trees. Amenities are minimal, with no potable water or electricity, but chemical toilets and ADA-compliant facilities are available. Visitors are advised to bring supplies, including water, to fully enjoy this unparalleled natural retreat.
