Campground Overview
About Quercus Wilderness Area
Can a campground offer both rugged wilderness and a unique geological legacy just minutes from town? The Quercus Wilderness Area proves it can, inviting campers into 111 acres of oak- and hickory-rich woodland just seven miles south of Oskaloosa, Iowa. This primitive camping destination combines secluded tent sites with remarkable natural features, including trails that wind through sandy silt loam soil formed during Iowa's glacial retreats—a rarity mirrored only by the famed Loess Hills of western Iowa.
The campground features five primitive tent sites, each equipped with a fire ring and picnic table, ensuring a back-to-basics experience. A nearby paved, handicap-accessible trail leads to a bluff offering scenic views, while the surrounding forest supports activities like hiking, cross-country skiing, turkey hunting, and mushroom foraging. Quercus is also home to the state-record Downy Serviceberry tree, adding a unique botanical touch to its appeal. Vault toilets are available, aligning with the park's rustic atmosphere.
Located just minutes from Oskaloosa, the campground offers easy access to the area's charming small-town amenities while remaining a true retreat into nature. With its blend of ecological significance, quiet surroundings, and recreational opportunities, Quercus Wilderness Area is ideal for weekend getaways, nature immersion trips, and anyone seeking solitude in a remarkable Iowa woodland setting.
