Campground Overview
About Red Creek Campground
What makes Red Creek Campground stand out is its remoteness, providing a truly off-the-grid experience amidst the stunning landscapes of the Dolly Sods Scenic Area. With just 12 primitive campsites surrounded by a unique ecosystem resembling northern Canada, this destination is a haven for hikers, wildlife enthusiasts, and those seeking solitude.
The campground features basic amenities, including picnic tables, fire rings, lantern posts, and vault toilets. However, it lacks electricity, showers, or potable water, so visitors must bring or treat their water. The sites cater to tent campers and smaller RVs or trailers, though the narrow, rugged access road can be challenging for larger vehicles. Its direct access to trails leading into the Dolly Sods Wilderness allows campers to explore diverse plant communities, enjoy huckleberry picking in July, and spot wildlife, including birds during seasonal banding.
Located about 20 miles northwest of Petersburg, West Virginia, Red Creek Campground is also within a half-hour drive of attractions like Seneca Rocks, offering additional opportunities for climbing and sightseeing. This campground is ideal for weekend getaways, backpacking trips, or stargazing under some of the clearest skies in the region.
