Campground Overview
About Santa Cruz Island Del Norte Backcountry Campground
Santa Cruz Island’s Del Norte Backcountry Campground offers an unparalleled escape into pristine wilderness, combining rugged isolation, breathtaking coastal views, and a challenging hike-in-only access. As the sole backcountry campground on Santa Cruz Island, it is ideal for seasoned backpackers seeking a truly remote and immersive outdoor experience.
This primitive campground features four designated tent-only sites set beneath a shaded oak grove, each equipped with a picnic table, a food storage box, and a pit toilet (campers must bring their own toilet paper). Water is not available, making it essential to carry a sufficient supply—recommended at one gallon per person per day. The 3.5-mile hike to reach the campground from Prisoners Harbor navigates through diverse ecosystems of island oak woodlands and coastal sage scrub, offering stunning vistas from 700 feet above sea level. The longer 5-mile route rewards hikers with panoramic views of the island’s southern coastline.
Located within Channel Islands National Park, about 20 miles off the Ventura, California coast, Santa Cruz Island is rich in natural and cultural history. Nearby, Prisoners Harbor provides access to kayaking, snorkeling, and diverse hiking trails. However, campers should prepare thoroughly for the island’s rugged terrain, variable weather, and carry-in, carry-out policy to preserve its delicate ecosystem.
