About Santa Cruz Island Scorpion Canyon Campground
A stay at the Santa Cruz Island Scorpion Canyon Campground offers an adventurous escape, blending coastal tranquility with rugged charm. Located on the eastern side of Santa Cruz Island within Channel Islands National Park, this campground is accessible only by boat and features a short hike from the pier, immersing campers in stunning ocean views, diverse wildlife, and a serene natural environment. Its sheltered valley position provides protection from coastal winds, while the eucalyptus trees offer ample shade.
The campground consists of 31 primitive, tent-only sites, including six group sites, spread over lower and upper loops. Each site features picnic tables, food storage lockers, and access to drinking water spigots, though campers must pack in all other supplies as there are no stores, showers, or trash services. Vault toilets are available, and quiet hours ensure a peaceful ambiance after 10:00 PM. Fires are prohibited, but enclosed gas stoves are permitted for cooking.
Beyond the campground, Santa Cruz Island presents numerous activities within easy reach, including hiking trails like the Cavern Point Loop and routes to Smugglers Cove, snorkeling, kayaking, and wildlife spotting. Visitors often encounter iconic island fauna, such as the endemic island fox and scrub-jay, along with breathtaking vistas of rugged coastlines and mountain peaks. Whether for a weekend retreat or a longer exploration, Scorpion Canyon Campground offers a unique opportunity to connect with nature in an unparalleled island setting.
