Campground Overview
About South Mineral Campground
Isolated by rugged mountain peaks and alive with the constant murmur of South Mineral Creek, South Mineral Campground offers a quintessential alpine camping experience ideal for nature enthusiasts and adventurers. This first-come, first-served campground features 26 well-spaced sites nestled among spruce and fir trees, with a few sites positioned serenely along the creekside. At an elevation of 9,800 feet, the campground provides breathtaking views of dramatic cliffs and cascading waterfalls, along with opportunities for wildlife sightings and wildflower-filled vistas.
Located just four miles along Forest Road 585, off U.S. Highway 550, and a short drive west of Silverton, the campground is a gateway to the renowned Ice Lake Trail, a strenuous hike leading to pristine alpine lakes surrounded by meadows and peaks. Other nearby attractions include trout fishing in South Mineral Creek and off-road trails exploring the mountainous terrain through Ophir Pass and Black Bear Pass. Despite its simplicity—offering only vault toilets, potable water, picnic tables, and fire grates with no electricity or showers—it is the perfect base for extended vacations or weekend escapes into the pristine beauty of the San Juan National Forest.
