About South Shore Campground
Perched at an elevation of 5,900 feet within the rugged beauty of the Eldorado National Forest, South Shore Campground offers a quintessential Sierra Nevada camping experience. Overlooking the scenic Lower Bear River Reservoir, this serene destination is defined by its forested hillside setting, access to water-based recreation, and proximity to pristine wilderness areas.
The campground features 22 campsites, including options for tents and RVs, each equipped with picnic tables, fire rings, and grills. While the amenities are simple—potable water and vault toilets—this enhances the sense of immersion in the natural environment. Many sites offer partial views of the reservoir, with towering conifers adding shade and privacy. Activities such as fishing, swimming, and boating on the 166-acre reservoir are steps away, with paddling and canoeing being particularly enjoyable against the tranquil waters. A boat ramp is located nearby, and anglers can target trout species. Beyond the water, visitors can explore the Pardoe Trail, which meanders through the Mokelumne Wilderness, offering both adventure and solitude.
Located about 25 miles east of Pioneer along State Route 88, the campground's remote yet accessible location balances convenience with escape. The nearby Bear River Lake Resort provides additional amenities such as a store, showers, and boat rentals, ensuring a blend of rustic and practical comforts. South Shore Campground is ideal for weekend escapes or extended stays, appealing to those seeking authentic connections to nature and outdoor recreation.
