Campground Overview
About Split Rock Park
Framed by the striking Sioux Quartzite formations and a serene waterfall created by a dam along Split Rock Creek, Split Rock Park Campground in Garretson, South Dakota, offers an inviting blend of natural beauty and historic charm. Its standout features include unique geological landscapes, a peaceful riverside setting, and the historical Works Progress Administration (WPA) architecture, including a dam, bathhouse, and bridges.
The campground provides a mix of camping options—nine primitive tent sites in a tranquil, wooded northern section, along with 12 RV sites featuring electrical hookups and additional non-electric and tent-only sites to the south. Every site includes a fire ring with a cooking grate and a picnic table. On-site amenities are basic yet functional, with drinking water, vault toilets, and a playground for families. A small museum and snack area within the old Sioux Quartzite visitor center add a cultural touch, while the boat launch areas and swimming spot north of the dam make the park ideal for aquatic activities like kayaking, canoeing, and fishing.
Located three blocks from downtown Garretson and adjacent to Devil’s Gulch, the campground is a gateway to local attractions, including the dramatic rock canyons explored via the Jesse James Pontoon and the nearby Palisades State Park reachable by water. Split Rock Park Campground is perfect for a quick weekend getaway or a peaceful stopover, offering a charming mix of outdoor recreation, local history, and natural scenery.
