Campground Overview
About Stockton Pass Campground
Would you expect sweeping vistas in such a remote corner of Arizona? Stockton Pass Campground delivers just that, offering striking views of the south slopes of the Pinaleño Mountains and the mountainous expanse of Sulphur Springs Valley below. Perched at 5,600 feet in elevation, this serene locale combines desert grasslands with scattered oak woodlands, creating a picturesque yet rustic setting where campers can truly disconnect.
The campground features seven first-come, first-served individual sites and one group camping area capable of accommodating up to 30 people. Amenities include picnic tables, fire rings, pedestal grills, vault toilets, and bear-proof trash containers, but visitors must bring their own water. The Shake Trail begins directly at the site, weaving through high desert terrain and connecting to higher-altitude adventures on the Swift Trail. Stargazing is unparalleled here due to minimal light pollution, while wildlife sightings—deer, black bear, and diverse bird species—enrich the natural experience.
Located just 30 minutes from Safford along the scenic AZ-266, Stockton Pass Campground is accessible yet feels remarkably secluded, making it an ideal destination for day hikes, weekend getaways, or longer nature retreats. Nearby, the Galiuro Wilderness area provides additional trails for exploration, adding to the region's rugged appeal.
