Campground Overview
About Timber Creek Campground
Perched at 8,900 feet in the Kawuneeche Valley along the serene Colorado River, Timber Creek Campground offers unparalleled access to the less-traveled western side of Rocky Mountain National Park. This campground defies expectations with its open layout—resulting from a mountain pine beetle infestation—that allows campers to enjoy sweeping views of surrounding peaks and vivid starry skies. Visitors are frequently treated to the unforgettable sights and sounds of moose and elk passing through, making this a deeply immersive natural experience.
This campground features 98 well-maintained sites, including 30 tent-only spots, accessible for tents, trailers, and RVs up to 30 feet. Amenities include potable water, flush toilets, food storage lockers for wildlife safety, fire rings, and an amphitheater hosting ranger programs. While shade is sparse due to recent regrowth of young pines, the flat terrain provides ease of setup, and the proximity to the Colorado River offers leisurely strolls and wildlife viewing. Guests should note the absence of showers, electrical hookups, and reliable cell service, preserving the rustic charm of the setting.
Located just 10 miles from Grand Lake, the campground serves as a gateway to quiet hikes, fishing opportunities, and historical exploration at the nearby Holzwarth Historic Site. Within 30 minutes, visitors can access the charming town of Grand Lake with dining, shopping, and additional recreation options. Timber Creek Campground is ideal for weekend getaways and extended stays, offering a peaceful retreat into the heart of Colorado’s high country wilderness.
