Upper Hospital Flat Group Site

The Upper Hospital Flat Group Site in Safford, Arizona, stands out as a tranquil high-elevation retreat in the Pinaleño Mountains, offering group camping in a serene meadow framed by fir and aspen trees. This historic site, once a field hospital for soldiers in the 1880s, blends natural beauty with historical significance, making it ideal for group gatherings, picnics, or outdoor adventures.

This group site accommodates up to 50 people and features a picnic table, parking area, and a campfire ring with a grill. Located along the Swift Trail Scenic Drive at over 9,000 feet altitude, it provides access to hiking, birdwatching, and wildlife viewing in one of North America’s most biodiverse mountain ranges. While there are no on-site toilets or trash facilities, campers can enjoy the peaceful setting and collect firewood from nearby dead-and-down vegetation.
