About Whitetail Campground
How cool can a summer getaway get? At 8,000 feet in elevation, Whitetail Campground in Mount Lemmon, Arizona, offers a refreshing escape from the heat, boasting temperatures significantly milder than the surrounding desert. Surrounded by majestic ponderosa pines, this group-only campground is renowned for its seclusion, scenic mountain setting, and accessibility to extraordinary outdoor activities.
Located within the Coronado National Forest, just five miles south of Summerhaven, Whitetail Campground caters to larger gatherings with five group sites equipped with picnic shelters, fire pits, grills, bear boxes, and clean restrooms. The sites can accommodate between 40 to 90 people, making it an ideal choice for reunions, retreats, and group adventures. The campground's vaulted toilets, trash collection, and limited electricity for small appliances add convenience to its rustic charm.
Within a short drive, visitors can explore Summerhaven, known for its quaint eateries and amenities, or venture to Rose Canyon Lake for trout fishing. Outdoor enthusiasts will appreciate the proximity to Mt. Lemmon's hiking trails, including opportunities to ascend its 9,157-foot summit, and the nearby University of Arizona observatory for stargazing. The Catalina Highway, a scenic route leading to the campground, offers breathtaking views of the Santa Catalina Mountains, rounding out an unforgettable nature retreat.
