Campground Overview
About Columbine Campground
The Columbine Campground, located between Questa and Red River in the Carson National Forest, offers a serene escape defined by its proximity to the fast-flowing Columbine Creek, shaded seclusion, and access to exceptional hiking trails. Distinguished by its natural ambiance, this campground combines the soothing sounds of the creek with sites tucked beneath tall pines, spruces, and aspens, providing both privacy and tranquility.
Set at 7,900 feet in elevation, Columbine Campground features 26 well-maintained campsites, each equipped with a picnic table, fire ring, and tent pad. While potable water is available, it must be carried back to your site, and other amenities include clean vault toilets. The campground is organized into two loops: an open loop near the entrance with mountain views and a second loop along the creek offering enhanced privacy. A trailhead at the campground leads directly into the Columbine-Hondo Wilderness, granting hikers access to 14 miles of trails featuring stream crossings and scenic vistas.
Conveniently situated along New Mexico Highway 38, the campground is just a short drive from the charming towns of Red River and Questa, as well as the famed Enchanted Circle scenic byway. Visitors can enjoy fishing along the Red River or exploring the nearby communities and their alpine culture, making it an excellent choice for weekend getaways or extended stays immersed in nature.
