Campground Overview
About Hunter Canyon Group Site
The Hunter Canyon Group Site, located just 8 miles southwest of Moab, Utah, defies the typical expectations of a serene desert retreat with its dramatic sandstone cliffs, vibrant red rock formations, and proximity to thrilling outdoor adventures. This primitive group camping area offers a direct gateway to the scenic Hunter Canyon Trail and popular climbing routes, making it an exceptional destination for hikers and climbers seeking both beauty and adventure.
The campground features basic amenities, including fire pits and pit toilets, but requires visitors to bring their own water and pack out all trash. The walk-in and drive-in sites are surrounded by the rugged beauty of Kane Creek Canyon, offering a sense of seclusion while still being accessible. The nearby Hunter Canyon Trail is a two-mile out-and-back trek that follows a spring-fed creek through lush vegetation and towering sandstone walls, providing a refreshing escape. While easily reachable via Kane Creek Road, the descent into the campground includes steep, narrow switchbacks, limiting access for vehicles over 22 feet.
In addition to the on-site attractions, Arches and Canyonlands National Parks are just a short drive away, offering endless opportunities for exploration. Whether you’re drawn to hiking, rock climbing, biking, or off-roading, the Hunter Canyon Group Site serves as a perfect base camp for day trips or weekend adventures in Moab’s iconic landscape.
