Campground Overview
About Sugarloaf Campground
Does the thought of camping at one of the highest-elevation campgrounds in the United States intrigue you? Perched at 10,800 feet in Wyoming's Medicine Bow National Forest, Sugarloaf Campground offers an unparalleled alpine experience with stunning vistas of the Snowy Range and nearby crystal-clear glacial lakes like Libby and Lewis.
This rustic campground features 16 well-spaced sites equipped with picnic tables, fire rings, and tent pads, fostering a cozy but secluded atmosphere. Though the towering spruce and fir trees have suffered from pine beetle damage, the campground still boasts expansive views and a peaceful setting for outdoor enthusiasts. Standard amenities include a hand pump for drinking water, vault toilets, and trash collection, but there are no electrical or water hookups, making it ideal for campers prepared for an off-grid adventure. Due to its high elevation, the campground lacks shade and is typically open only from mid-July to early September.
Located just 40 miles west of Laramie and a short drive from Centennial, the campground is conveniently close to numerous hiking trails and recreational opportunities. Libby and Lewis Lakes, both teeming with brook trout and splake, invite fishing and non-motorized boating enthusiasts. For adventure seekers, three popular trailheads nearby lead through wildflower meadows and rugged terrain, while the Libby Flats Observation Area, just 1.5 miles away, provides breathtaking panoramic views. Wildlife encounters are common, with moose, deer, and pikas frequently spotted.
Whether you're planning a weekend retreat, a fishing-focused escape, or simply a quiet high-altitude getaway, Sugarloaf Campground is a pristine choice for connecting with Wyoming's majestic wilderness.
